In 1620, a group of Puritans in Britain who advocated reforms withdrew from
the state religion because of their unsatisfied ideals and ambitions, and became
independent of the Protestantism. This act aroused the hatred of the British
incumbents. These Puritans could not withstand the persecution and
discrimination of the rulers. They fled to the Netherlands first. In early
September, they sailed across the ocean and prepared to go into exile in the
United States. The ship wandered for 65 days in the rough sea and finally
reached the east coast of the United States in November, landing in the port of
Providence, Rhode Island.
At the time, it was still a bleak and uncultivated virgin land, with
turkeys and other wild animals everywhere. When it comes to winter, it comes to
strange places, lack of clothes and food, and the harsh environment is
threatening their lives. At this critical moment, the local Indians brought
food, daily necessities and production tools to them and helped them build their
new home.
After the British settled in their new home, they thanked the Indians who
helped and supported them in times of crisis. They also thanked God for their
"gift". On the fourth Thursday of November, the turkeys were hunted. Indulge in
delicacies, treat Indians with hospitality, and celebrate with them for three
days. After that, every year on the fourth Thursday of November, such
celebrations will be held. In addition to hosting the Indians to eat roast
turkeys, they will hold sports competitions such as archery, running, wrestling,
etc., and dance and dance around the campfire at night.
