一、现在分词 vs. 定语从句

在雅思写作中，现在分词可以用于替换定语从句，使句子结构更加精简。现在分词既可以修饰人，也可以修饰物。被修饰的成分可以是主语、是宾语或其他名词性质的成分。

原句：The number of international students who came to western countries increased greatly in recent years.

改后：The number of international students coming to western countries increased greatly in recent years.

二、现在分词 vs. 状语从句

在雅思写作中，现在分词的另一个用法是充当状语，可以用来表示时间或者原因。

①表示时间，相当于时间状语从句

原句：While they were constructing the new residential area, the workers found an old tomb from the Ming Dynasty.

改后： While constructing the new residential area, the workers found an old tomb from the Ming Dynasty.

注意：现在分词作状语时，前面应该保留when，while等连词。

②表示原因，相当于原因状语从句

原句：As he stayed up late last night, he felt asleep in the meeting this morning.

改后：Staying up late last night, he felt asleep in the meeting this morning.
